Read for Literacy is a nonprofit organization that was first founded in Toledo in 1986. It is their mission to provide a range of literacy services and training that enables children, adults, and families the opportunity to achieve success.
It is estimated that more than 39,000 adults in Lucas County alone read at the Below Basic level and are functionally illiterate. Another 100,000 adults in Lucas County are estimated to read at the Basic Level. This means that nearly 140,000 adults are unable to read the newspaper, fill out job applications, and help their children with their homework. Read for Literacy has programs and services that are designed to assist adults, children, and families to gain the skills they need to have literacy success.
With the help of volunteers, they provide basic literacy tutoring and English Language Learning to adults in our community in addition to their children’s program, Creating Young Readers. Read for Literacy also works to build at-home libraries for these students by sending home several books throughout the year.
