Did you know that Dayton has been referred to as the Gem City for more than 170 years?! Historians have looked into the reason for this nickname and believe it first originated back from an article written on August 18, 1845, by a Cincinnati Chronicle reporter. In the article, “T” talks about how neat, beautiful, and well kept up Dayton was and referred to it as the “gem of all our interior towns.” There are other theories but this is one of the first connections that has been found between Dayton and the Gem City nickname.
